Industry
The Nipawin area grains are an integral ingredient of a rather neat format of local industry interplay. Grains from surrounding farms find their way to local seed crushing plants where their oils are extracted for such products as margarine and cooking oils.
Bunge Canada, with a workforce of about 75, is Nipawin's largest employer and is the largest processor in Canada of vegetable oil from canola/rapeseed and sunflower crops.
PICKSEED recently acquired the forage processing plant from Farm Pure (the newly constructed 2003 SW Newfield Seeds plant). The Nipawin forage processing plant has capacity to process 8,000 to 10,000 MT annually. The plant consists of three cleaning lines and over 28,000 square feet in five warehouses. The main warehouse has the latest technology allowing the plant to package seeds at 22 bags/minute or packages 10,560 bags in an eight hour day.
Apiaries are a common sight near Nipawin, as honey production is one of the Town's largest industries. There are about 31,000 hives in the area with the annual production of about 6.2 million pounds of high quality honey which is shipped to processing plants across Canada. From here, Nipawin honey is marketed worldwide. One local producer also makes candles from the beeswax, which have become quite popular with their unique designs and colors.
Another prominent feature in the Nipawin area is the .75 square kilometer (200 acre) Boughen Nurseries on which 200,000 to 300,000 trees, shrubs and various nursery stocks are grown and sold throughout Canada's three prairie provinces.
Nipawin sits on the edge of the Fort a la Corne Kimberlite body - the largest diamond-bearing geological feature in North America, and diamond exploration is ongoing.
The Nipawin area has also been home to oil and natural gas exploration since 2007.
The forestry industry contributed to Nipawin's early development and continues to play a major role in the economy.
The tourism industry in Nipawin flourishes. We are well known thanks to our attractions and our strategic location on Tobin and Codette lakes.
The production of fishing tackle has become very popular.
