Industry
The Nipawin area grains are an integral ingredient of a rather neat format of local industry interplay. Grains from surrounding farms find their way to local seed crushing plants where their oils are extracted for such products as margarine and cooking oils.
Bunge Canada, with a workforce of about 75, is Nipawin's largest employer and is the largest processor in Canada of vegetable oil from canola/rapeseed and sunflower crops.
Further evidence of Nipawin's agricultural base is witnessed in Farm Pure Seeds, a local seed house who market their products across Canada, as well as in the United States and Europe.
Apiaries are a common sight near Nipawin, as honey production is one of the Town's largest industries. There are about 31,000 hives in the area with the annual production of about 6.2 million pounds of high quality honey which is shipped to processing plants across Canada. From here, Nipawin honey is marketed worldwide. One local producer also makes candles from the beeswax, which have become quite popular with their unique designs and colors.
Another prominent feature in the Nipawin area is the .75 square kilometer (200 acre) Boughen Nurseries on which 200,000 to 300,000 trees, shrubs and various nursery stocks are grown and sold throughout Canada's three prairie provinces.
F. P. Aquafarm, located on the banks of the Saskatchewan River just north of Nipawin, established in 1984 is an original concept for Nipawin. The farm produced up to 200,000 fish per year for sale throughout Canada.
The lumbering industry contributed to Nipawin's early development and continues to play a major role in the economy.
The creation of Tobin Lake and the recent creation of Codette Lake are contributing greatly to the tourist industry in this area.
The production of fishing tackle has become very popular.
