The Nipawin Canola Production Centre was opened in Nipawin on July 16 2002, joining the ranks of 11 Canola Production Centres located across Western Canada.
The Canola Production Centre was envisioned with help from the Town of Nipawin Economic Development Department, Nipawin Chamber of Commerce, R.M. of Nipawin, local producers and the local agriculture industry sector. As well, many local businesses and individuals have helped this program to become a reality. The Canola Council of Canada is envisioning our field scale research program to be tremendously beneficial to not only producers, but all sectors of the local economy. The overall goal of this project is designed to look at field scale agronomic industry technology and its practices for canola grown in the area.
The hard work and dedication of all parties involved have made this project (CPC) unique to Western Canada. This year's program experienced environmental and emergence problems. Cool, dry weather and heavy trash conditions hampered emergence, resulting in some seedling mortality. In drier areas of the field, emerging seedlings were not able to sustain its TURGOR pressure (ability to stay rigid) and push through the soil surface. Rain shortly after emergence did, however, result in seeds stranded in dry soil to later emerge. The combination of these factors hampered early plant development.
Since then, the crop has recovered in most areas and continues to flourish. Moisture has now become the most limiting factor in reaching our target yields.
